Can Children Go to an Emergency Room?

Emergency Room Mesquite, TX

Are you wondering if children can go to an emergency room for any injuries, illnesses, or concerns? Emergency rooms are great facilities to use for patients of all ages, children included. They are staffed with doctors and nurses who are trained to work with adults and children for general healthcare needs.

There is a good amount of information to be aware of regarding children visiting emergency rooms. Find out more below.

Can a child go to an emergency room?

Children can receive medical care just about anywhere, but it is good to know when emergency room treatment is the place to visit for your child's specific situation.

When visiting an emergency room is necessary

Children can be taken to an emergency room if it is necessary. While we do not require an appointment ahead of time, parents can call our emergency room staff if they are unsure of how to proceed. Minor injuries or illnesses can be diagnosed and treated in an emergency room.

Minor things such as a cold, a small cut, or a sprained ankle can all easily be diagnosed and treated with a general physician. However, more severe cases of an illness or injury, visit an emergency room right away. Major illnesses or injuries should be addressed by an emergency doctor or one that is specialized in pediatrics.

Adjust expectations

It is important for parents to adjust their expectations in regard to taking their children to an emergency room. Because the physicians and nurses that work at these facilities are not necessary pediatrically trained, they may not be able to provide as advanced a level of care as a pediatrician could.

Although the doctors and nurses may not have as advanced training in pediatrics, this is not to say that they won't be able to provide the necessary care that is required for the child if they are experiencing an injury or illness. All physicians, including emergency rooms, are trained to treat health-related problems of various sorts.

Consult with a doctor

Since children are still growing and developing, it is often essential that they receive child-specific care. Most pediatric offices are only open during typical business hours, such as from nine to five, so an emergency room may be a good option if something arises outside those hours. Most offices have an on-call number or after-hours pediatric doctor available to consult with, in case something urgent arises.

Speaking with a pediatric doctor about what is going on will ensure that the best health measures are taken. A second opinion from a pediatric doctor is likely to produce the best outcome.
